Western Kinsmen of the sun
Western Kinsmen Of The Sun, you guys have been making a ruckus lately, selling out Mojo's last week. Feeling good having your first single out?
Yeah man, of course! It’s been far too long in the making. We recorded the first version of the EP about a year ago and scrapped the whole thing to go in and work with Rob at Poons. It’s nice having something to show for it that we’re all stoked with.. It always felt a bit dire sending people in the direction of the dodgy demo’s that we had up on SoundCloud - but my lord would you believe it, no more dodgy demo’s (at least for a while). Mojo’s was wild. I think we exceeded all the expectations we had, it was the first show that we’d ever put on and we were packed by 9. Wicked energy in the room!

Did you buy beers after the show or put the money in the kitty?
Any money we make we try and put back into the band in getting ready for the next thing to creep along. Though we do enjoy a few beers so we pray the venue is feeling generous and our wallets aren’t too desperately light by the end of the night.
How's your first time in the studio watching/listening to your tunes come to life?
Being our first time in the studio the whole thing served to educate us on what to actually expect for professional recording. We planned on being there for 5 days total (done & dusted), but 5 days turned to 10, and then 10 turned to 16 before it was finished haha. The songs changed heaps in the studio, and the whole EP ended up being a lot groovier than I thought it was going to be. We got Moana Lutton in at the last minute to do backing vocals for most of the tracks, and she really lifted the whole production into something really special.

Was Barney behaving himself at Poon's Head Studio?
He’s a demanding little bastard, but you have to love the balls the little guy has. I’m sure if you listen hard enough you can hear a few lines from Dr Barnes in the recordings (yelling for Schmacko’s and a pat).
You guys are all from Bunbury right? How's it living up in the big smoke?
Its mad fun for music! The scene in Bunbury is pretty reserved and theres no where near as many opportunities to play tunes, but we still love going down there. The Prince is my favourite venue to play. I’m alway worse for wear the next day, but hometown gig’s are always full of mates I haven’t seen in agessss, and the Prince treats bands like royalty.

Who's doin' it good in the Perth music kingdom?
Man. There’s too many bands doing it good up here! Spacey Jane, Southern River Band, Marmalade Mama, Moonlighter, Porn Crumps, POW Negro. The list could go on but I’d run the risk of not saying much, by saying far more than I need to. I hear everyone constantly saying that ‘theres something in the water in Perth’ but thats bullshit man. There’s just a lot of really hard working bands, and a fucking excellent network of people that dig music. I was talking to Nelson from POW the other day and we’re going to do a drawing of all our favourite local musicians in a human pyramid, helping each other get that leg up. I don’t know whats at the top.. maybe old mate K.P doing a waltz with Lady Gaga hahaha.

What do you like listening to in your spare time? Any guilty pleasures the other boys don't know about (yet)?
Hmmmmm… guilty pleasures. I’ve been playing this song lately called the ‘Rattlin’ Bog’ by the Irish Rovers and everyone hates me for it (but maybe thats why I love it) hahaha. Strokes for folks. Give it a listen.
Finally if you could let anyone punch you in the face who would it be?
Man if I could be punched in the face by anyone it would have to be for the shock factor of that person actually displaying some aggression. So maybe, like.. Ghandi. What would one have to do for Ghandi to bust out with a right hook? Something terrible.
