Mugwump with frontman tam glover
How did the members of Mugwump align themselves?
We aligned in a fashion not unlike a few pieces of driftwood floating at sea and all washing up on the same beach. Luckily we were all born on the same planet and happened to be living in a similar part of it. This came in handy once we realised we didn’t have a band so we should probably start one. We must have came from the same star or sperm because i don’t know how else this could’ve happened.
Who are the bands you all listen to or draw inspiration from?
Pretty much just whatever is on the radio or the TV. I like anything. So much cool R’n’B and pop coming out these days, the catchiest melodies and the sexiest vids, how could you not be inspired?! Also Triple J seems to be playing really cool songs these days! I get most of my cd’s from petrol stations and coles self serve checkouts because its just so convenient, you can even put the songs on your computer and transfer them on your phone to listen to on the train or at recess time.
You guys have been together for a few years now, has your music evolved much over that period of time?
Up until about 6 months ago when we started gigging, we were a pretty useless bunch of drop kicks. Sick of being in that state, we decided to play a show, hence forcing us to come up with some kind of musical songs that take up a certain length of time often referred to as 30 minutes. So we did that for a few months, but in that time we were writing new songs, and these aforementioned new songs turned out to be pretty 2.0 so we became mugwump 2.0! Its onwards and upwards from here, as we incorporate these new songs into our live set and master the brown sound, your gonna need to carry a spare set of jocks around daily as the side effects can linger in your bowels.
You guys have the Dawn Of The Gizzfest this weekend, whats it like knowing you'll be supporting one of Australia's most popular bands?
“Happy to be here and thanks for having us” I always say, its a good feel. But yeah we could’ve only hoped this would happen, we should probably try and play a good set. We will make you proud.
Which bands in Perth are doin' it good at the moment?
Perth has the healthiest scene I’ve ever seen in a Perth, so luckily we don’t have to look far to hear good music. SpacemanAntics, The New Pollution, French Rockets, Dream Rimmy, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Hideous Sun Demon, Kashakoi, Wheelers of Oz, Spunloves, Mt. Mountain, Dougal’s Casino… We have way too many good bands here, its getting ridiculous!
Are there any upcoming releases for Mugwump?
Yeah we are recording an EP next week! We intend to release it when the winter sun sets for the last time and the farmer can see hope on the horizon of spring. Shortly thereafter, an album will be salvaged out of the bin, and we will record that when we get daylight savings back.
Finally Tam, are you a Mugwump?
Yes. I was born a boy, but throughout my teenage years i noticed strange happenings and a discolouration in my skin. I was having difficulty remembering english and a strange limb started growing out of my skull. Something had happened, was i still a boy or was i not still a boy? My parents said it was just a phase and i said “no mum, this is me!” while running away to cry in my room. Luckily modern medicine advanced rapidly and i was able combine some panadol, bleach and turps into a juice i would drink in secrecy. After a while i turned back into a boy but i still identify as a mugwump, because on all levels except physical i am a mugwump.
