When did you start creating your artwork and how has the journey been to get to where you are now?
I started when I was about six, so it’s taken me a while. I don’t see myself as successful or comfortable yet though, there’s a good chance I’ll never have that “ahhh, I’ve made it” feeling. My work changes constantly depending on my surroundings and the people I meet, so the ‘journey’ has definitely just started and will continue on until my hands eventually fall off.
The Koi Child album artwork is amazing, what is it like working with one of the fastest rising bands in Perth right now?
Thank you. It’s easy; they are a bunch of sweet hearts. I was offered the job because their drummer Blake followed my art page and really liked it. I’ve got nothing but kind words to say about the eight of them (that’s including their manager, Harris.)

There is a pretty massive mural you've done at The Garage, have you ever had trouble working at scales that large? It’s never much trouble, I don’t see myself working on murals much in the future though. I prefer being able to lock myself in my room spending hours on tiny details that no one will probably even notice, than sitting in the sun for a few days blocking out big bits of colour. That being said The Garage was still a fun project, really glad I did it and happy with how it turned out, but murals make my arms sore. What inspires you to create the themes you portray in your work? People, my immediate surroundings and what I’m reading or watching. They are never anything to do with the actual subject matter, but these things all change my mood and that resinates directly with what I choose to paint. I started creating space/future landscapes not long after watching La Planete Sauvage though so that’s probably been a fairly direct influence to the style I work in. |
Who are some artists you keep an eye on for inspiration?
I look through Ben Montero’s work quite a bit, keeping Robert Crumb’s style of work still alive. Mario Martinez’s work is always incredible to look at as well. I don’t keep updated as much as I should with artist’s currently working in the field; most of my influence comes from the dead ones.
And your favourite Perth artists?
Albert Pritchard. He is probably going to be mad at me for calling him an artist, but he just made a picture for the centrefold of the new Shit Narnia EP and it looks sick. Good one Albert. Also Kim (kim kim kim) and Liam Dee, because they are both very talented and good eggs.

What have you got coming up this year we can keep an ear and an eye out for?
At the start of April I’ll be involved with FORM again but it’ll be for installation art rather than painting. I’m collaborating with another artist on a few big projects this year that will be completely different to the work I’ve been producing up until now. I’ll still be painting and drawing constantly no doubt, but very excited to see if any of these more questionable projects will be able to come to fruition.
